Historical Revisionism
We celebrate our mission to destroy the Roman Catholic Church and the Society of Jesus with the words, “hoya saxa”.
The Georgetown Secular Society was originally founded in February 2023 as an independent alumni organization of Georgetown University. Our founding was prompted by Georgetown University’s Reconciliation Initiative. Although advertised as an honest scholarly engagement of Georgetown's connection to the U.S. slave trade, this initiative ultimately amounted to a vanity project from the Society of Jesus. As the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States, Georgetown University’s Working Group on Slavery consciously omitted several topics which impugn its religious roots. For instance, although the Working Group confirmed that Georgetown's former president, James Ryder, S.J., justified slavery by appealing to the Bible, they did not detail the Bible’s views on slavery. This omission was an egregious abandonment of the Working Group's responsibility to the truth. The Bible explicitly endorses slavery.
This failure constituted only one of many oversights. Jesuits and the Catholic Church were extensively involved in the transatlantic slave trade from its inception to its conclusion. The Catholic Church emboldened the capture of Africans by declaring them “enemies of the Christian faith”, arrested and forced “heretics” who protested the enslavement of Africans to face the judgement inquisitors, and censored anti-slavery literature. Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States, shirked an obvious responsibility and betrayed its own atonement efforts by ignoring this history.
This instance of historical revisionism at Georgetown University comprises a broader Catholic tradition of amnesia and willful ignorance. Today, Church leaders enable child rape by shielding pedophiles from the law. Several Attorney General and Grand Jury reports from Illinois, Pennsylvania and Maryland paint a clear picture of an institution which protected hundreds of pedophiles for decades as they raped thousands of children across the United States. There is evidence that the Roman Catholic Church has enabled child rape for millenia. None of this is acceptable.
From its humble beginnings as an alumni organization of Georgetown University, the Georgetown Secular Society has since grown to a global movement for the worldwide prosecution and ultimate destruction of the Roman Catholic Church and the Society of Jesus. Please view our Petition for a Secular Georgetown to learn of the facts that catalyzed our organization. Additionally, browse our resources page for information relevant to our mission. I hope you will keep in touch with us as our organization develops!

Colors
The Georgetown Secular Society has two official colors, known as Secular Red and Secular Gold. The Society's official colors date back to the conclusion of Georgetown University's Working Group on Slavery—adopted to distinguish between between the university’s historical revisionism and the Society’s commitment to science, humanism, and reason. They are listed as tertiary colors in Georgetown University's official color guide.
Gentium Plus is the official typeface for the Georgetown Secular Society.
Mascots
The Vitruvian Man is a drawing by the Italian Renaissance artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci dated to approximately 1490. The illustration is often associated with the Renaissance, a period of European cultural, artistic, political and economic “rebirth” following the Middle Ages. Three elements form the image: a single male figure, one circle, and one square.
In contrast to Christian depictions of Jesus Christ crucified, the Vitruvian Man stands unabashedly naked and proud in measured proportions to his surroundings. For this reason, the Vitruvian Man is celebrated as representing humanism, the scientific method, anatomy, and art.
The Spartan Hoplite is one of the most famed warriors of the ancient world. As a mascot of the Georgetown Secular Society, he represents the determination and grit of our organization.
